William H. Restieaux

William H. Restieaux bought out his partner during the Civil War, converting "McKee and Restieaux" to "William H. Restieaux, Grocer."
Restieaux' store stood at 106 S. High St., a desirable location just a few doors south of the Statehouse. He lived several blocks away on Spring Street between 4th and 5th Avenues.
Restieaux, who advertised extensively, was probably a Union supporter. He proudly advertised, "Yankee vegetables" among the "fine and staple" groceries in his shop.
His name rarely appeared in the city's news columns. In February a supplier had lost a check Restieaux had written for beans and potatoes. In October, one paper took note of Restieaux' fine apples.
Restieaux tokens are relatively common. Rarity estimates suggest 583 to 2,218 pieces are extant.
Two of the five varieties are Lanphear mules.
