JUSTICE
JOHN PAUL STEVENS
Nominated December 1, 1975 by President Ford
Confirmed December 17, 1975 by the US Senate
Sworn in December 19, 1975
Justice John Paul Stevens is the oldest justice on the Supreme Court and thus obviously has the best chance of being the first one to retire. The chance of his retirement makes Republicans even more enthusiastic to retake the Presidency in 2000. Justice Stevens is one of the more liberal justices on the current Supreme Court.
Justice Stevens was born in Chicago Illinois on April 20, 1920. He attended both the University of Chicago and Northwestern University during the 1940's. But also during that time he took a short break to serve in active duty with the US Navy from 1942-1945.
Justice Stevens was appointed to the Supreme Court by a Republican but has mostly sided with the decisions of the Clinton appointees Justice Ginsburg and Justice Breyer.
