JUSTICE DAVID SOUTER

Born September 17, 1939
Nominated by President Bush in 1990
Took oath on October 9, 1990

Justice Souter is one of the more moderate judges on the court. As one of President Bush's proudest appointments he continues to become more influential and popular among the rest of his colleagues. There is a strong possibility that he would become the next Chief Justice if Bush Jr. were elected President.

Again, like several of the previous justices nominated by Republican Presidents, he tends to side more with the liberal justices than with the more conservative ones.

Souter, who is single, has spent most of his life in the northeastern part of the country. He was born in Maine and spent most of the rest of his life and career in New Hampshire, including the New Hampshire Supreme Court.
