CHIEF
JUSTICE WILLIAM REHNQUIST
Appointed in 1971 by President Nixon
Chief Justice William Rehnquist was appointed to the top position in 1986 by President Ronald Reagan. He has received his most fame during the Senate Impeachment trial of President Clinton. It was during this time that he showed just how tight he follows the "rules." Rehnquist has always been known as one who likes orderliness and proper etiquette.
Rehnquist is one of three main conservatives on the Supreme Court. He is also one who will decide cases on his opinion and not on the idea that he is "towing the line" of fellow conservatives. Whether you agree with his decisions or not, he is probably one of the best men for the position he now holds. His overall demeanor and character is perfect for the position.
Chief Justice William Rehnquist is expected to retire soon. He is the second oldest justice on the Supreme Court, but has been on the Supreme Court longer than any other current serving justice. Rumor has it that he will retire in 2001, if Republicans win the Presidency in 2000.
