JUSTICE
RUTH BADER GINSBURG
Born March 15, 1933
Nominated by President Clinton
Sworn in August 10, 1993
Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is somewhat moderate in her views although still a liberal at heart. She has very little influence on the rest of the court. Yet, much of this may be because she has only been on the high court for less than six years. She has a pretty good chance of becoming the next chief justice is a Democrat is President when Rehnquist leaves.
Justice Ginsburg is friends with Justices O'Connor and Scalia, but otherwise she is not very popular with others inside the court. Many of her judgements agree with Justices Souter, Breyer, and Stevens. Needless to say, she agrees with Justices Thomas and Scalia the least.
Justice Ginsburg got her B. A. at Cornell University in 1954. She then attended Harvard Law School from 1956-1958. She eventually received her LL. B. from Columbia Law School in 1959. She went straight to work as a law clerk in the United States District Court system. In 1962 she started teaching and taking part in various University and College offerings at places such as Columbia and Rutgers.
From 1973-1980 Justice Ginsburg worked as the general counsel for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). During these same years she also took part or headed up many other organizations and committees.
President Carter nominated her for a judge in the Unites States Court of Appeals. She was sworn in on June 30, 1980.
It was June 14, 1993 when President Clinton decided to nominate her for the United States Supreme Court. The Senate confirmed her position on August 3, 1993. Seven days later she was sworn in as Associate Supreme Court Justice.
