JUSTICE
STEPHEN G. BREYER
Born August 15, 1938
Nominated by President Clinton
Sworn in August 3, 1994
Justice Breyer is the most recent justice to become a part of the highest court in the land. He is also President Clinton's second sworn in nominee for that position. Justice Breyer has earned or received degrees from Stanford University, Oxford University, Magdalen College, and the Harvard Law School. Justice Breyer went straight from Harvard to being a law clerk for Associate Justice Arthur J. Goldberg of the Supreme Court of the United States in 1964.
In 1965 he then became a special assistant to the assistant attorney general. He later became part of the Watergate special prosecution force. As time passed he later worked for several committees within the Senate until President Carter nominated him for the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. During most of his career he was also a professor, lecturer, or assistant professor at one or more institutions.
He was finally nominated by President Clinton to the Supreme court on May 13, 1994. His nomination was then confirmed by the Senate on July 29, 1994. Throughout his short time on the high court, Breyer's decisions have sided with Justices Ginsburg and Souter most of the time. Justice Breyer is not expected to leave the court any time soon.
