Have We Forgotten?
July 1999

Recently one state has debated the very words in this great document. Many want students to say them in school just as they say the Pledge to the flag. Opponents say this may be unconstitutional. What has our country come to when we believe the Declaration of Independence is unconstitutional? Here are those very words:

“We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal; that they are endowed, by their creator, with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”

One is led to believe that these people that are against the Declaration of Independence have not read the Constitution recently. Could these people be the same people that believe in gun control and separation of church and state?

How can people be so ignorant of what a document says? The answer is simple: laziness and selfishness. People will believe what they want to believe. If they never hear the truth, or never read the constitution, they have no guidelines by which to go by. This deprived person will believe whatever sounds good. Unfortunately, one who lacks the knowledge of truth will believe “good” is whatever is best for themselves.

Thus laziness plus selfishness leads to false beliefs. Unfortunately, this is where our culture stands today.
