“What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called Christ?” Pontius Pilate, Matthew 27:22
Isaiah:
But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
After the suffering of his soul, he will see the light of
life and be satisfied; by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many,
and he will bear their iniquities. Isaiah
53:5,6,11
To Mary, the mother of
Jesus:
But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end.” Luke 1:30-33
To the shepherds after
the birth of Jesus:
An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the
Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them,
“Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the
people. Today in the town of
John:
He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God—children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling amount us. We
have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father,
full of grace and truth. John 1:10-14
Peter:
When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples,
"Who do people say the Son of Man is?"
They replied, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still
others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets."
"But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?"
Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living
God."
Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not
revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven. Matthew 16:13-17
Paul:
And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself
and became obedient to death—even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him
to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the
name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and un der the
earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God
the Father. Philippians 2:6-11
At his Baptism:
At that time Jesus came from
At the Transfiguration:
After six days Jesus took
with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high
mountain by themselves. There he was transfigured before them. His face shone
like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. Just then there
appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.
Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I
will put up three shelters--one for you, one for Moses and one for
Elijah."
While he was still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped them, and a voice from
the cloud said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.
Listen to him!" Matthew 17:1-5 (also Mark 9:2-7 and Luke
9:30-34)
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and
only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save
the world through him.” John 3:16,17
"I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and
believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has
crossed over from death to life. I tell you the truth, a time is coming and has
now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear
will live. For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son to
have life in himself. And he has given him authority to judge because he is the
Son of
Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty. But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all that he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day." John 6:35-40
"Lord," Martha said to Jesus, "if you had
been here, my brother would not have died. But I know that even now God will
give you whatever you ask."
Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again."
Martha answered, "I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the
last day."
Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in
me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will
never die. Do you believe this?"
"Yes, Lord," she told him, "I believe that you are the Christ,
the Son of God, who was to come into the world." John 11:21-27
Thomas said to him, "Lord, we don't know where you are going, so how can
we know the way?"
Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to
the Father except through me. If you really knew me, you would know my Father
as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him." John 14:5-7
After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed: "Father, the
time has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. For you granted
him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have
given him. Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God,
and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. I have brought you glory on earth by
completing the work you gave me to do. And now, Father, glorify me in your
presence with the glory I had with you before the world began. John 17:1-5
