FIRST ANNUAL COMEDY AWARDS

Hosted by Alan King, the awards ceremonies will originate from the Pantages Theater in Hollywood. The recently formed American Academy of Humor sponsors the event. The program will include live performances by artists of the material that earned them their nominations, clips from nominated tv shows and motion .pictures, and classic comedy sketches. The awards will honor entertainers, writers, programs, and films in 17 categories including films, tv, stage, nightclub, concert and print. Bob Hope will receive the Will Rogers Humanitarian Award, representing a lifetime contribution to humanitarian causes outside of show business.

The Mac Davis Show has its last outing in this time period, and it’s a good one. Glen Campbell and songwriter Jimmy Webb join in the music, with solos, duets and trios with Mac. Paul Lynde handles the comedy – a spoof on those CBS bicentennial minutes, a skit about a camp counselor and a bit about an inflation fighter, among others.

Donny and Marie Osmond, who have achieved superstar status through their records and concerts, are the co-hosts and stars of the ABC Television Network’s “Donny and Marie Osmond Show,” a music and comedy special airing tonight at 8 in color. Bob Hope, Paul Lynde, the Osmond Brothers — Alan, Wayne, Merrill, Jay and Jimmy — and Kate Smith are guest stars. Shipstads and Johnson Ice Follies skaters and world karate champion Chuck Norris are featured. Hollywood magic created through the ingenuity of producers Sid and Marty Krofft produces a crystal ice cave, a kaleidoscopic circus 1990 and a jungle complete with a lake.The grand finale features the entire cast in a rousing celebration of America.

AMERICAN GUILD OF VARIETY ARTISTS AWARDS

Jackie Gleason hosts this 90-minute special saluting the top performers in the field of live entertainment – they receive a “Georgie,” a statuette with the likeness of George M. Cohan. Taped last Dec. 21 at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, this special features such presenters as Jack Albertson, George Burns, Red Buttons, Jack Haley, Sr., Gabe Kaplan, Telly Savalas, and Jimmie Walker. Winners include Lucille Ball, Shirley Bassey, John Denver, Liberace, Paul Lynde, Tony Orlando and Dawn, Cathy Rigby & Joan Rivers

Paul Lynde receives award from Jackie Gleason as Comedian of the Year on CBS special. AGVA had 8,000 members.

Mother and Father Osmond join their children to sing “When I’m 64” on the Osmonds’ Valentine special Sunday at 7 p.m. The ABC program also spotlights guests Andy Gibb, Ruth Buzzi and Paul Lynde. And the families of the Osmond clan also pay a visit. The three guest stars, along with Donny, Marie, Jimmy and the other performing Osmond Bros., open the show with “Love Is a Good Foundation.” Guest Gibb sings “(Our Love) Don’t Throw It All Away” and the Osmond Bros. perform “Emily.” The entire clan, including grandchildren, gather for a period production number which features a rnedley of “Love Makes the World Go Round,” “I’ve Got a Crush on You,” “It Had to Be You,” “Love Is the Reason,” “Peg O’ My Heart,” “Would You Like to Take a Walk?” and “Valentine Waltz.” Perry Rosemond directs … Paul Lynde gives a pep talk to a group of potential Cupids.
