Salute to Ruth Etting |
#2 … June 27, 1968 |
"This show gives Paul Lynde two of his funniest moments. In one he is Buck Frank, the great lion tamer, facing a 'student lion,' which is the camera. In a skit about old-time radio shows, he’s a falling down drunk who sobers up instantly to play 'Jack Armstrong, All-American Boy.' The major skit is called 'Having a Baby,' about a movie company making a documentary. Frank Sinatra Jr. and Joey Heatherton lead the entire cast in a tribute to Ruth Etting. |

Variety: “The biggest laugh on last week’s edition of the Dean Martin summer replacement series came from the cast. In a clever blackout, PL walked on camera and began to chuckle into the tube, gradually escalating his mirth up to eye-streaming belly-laughs. He was then joined by Stu Gilliam, who went through the whole process, then the other members of the cast, and the chorus joined in the hilarity. Then some stopped laughing and walked away and the entire process reversed itself… It was a fragment of strangely effective tv” (7/13/1968). |

Sketches about flagpole-sitting & channel-swimming |
"Paul Lynde lends a good comedic touch especially in a funny bit as a nervous flagpole sitter who is stunned to find a lady reporter, Barbara Heller, shinnying up the pole for an interview. He also teams up with Joey Heatherton for still another spoof of Bonnie and Clyde, this one done in the John and Marsha manner. Joey also sings 'T’ain’t What You Do' in a provocative fan dance production. Frank Sinatra Jr. does 'Let’s Take A Walk Around the Block,' and the co-hosts join Lynde for 'I’ve Got Feeling You’re Fooling.'" |
