Tradition…Excellence…Friendship are the hallmarks of the Medina
Invitational is known for and we will continue to bring together some of
Ohio’s, and the nation’s, best wrestling at “The Greatest Show in
Wrestling”. For the 2001-2002
wrestling season, the M.I.T. has been named the 7th Toughest
Tournament in the Nation in the pages of Wrestling USA magazine, one of
the top amateur wrestling magazines in the country. This is a great honor to be
in the Top Ten in the nation with the likes of the Reno Tournament of Champions,
the Best of the East in Delware as well as the Walsh Jesuit Ironman at Walsh
Jesuit.
The 2000-2001 wrestling season finished on a high note for the Medina
tournament as we watched 114 young men who had wrestled on the mats of Medina
last December qualified for the “biggest show” in Ohio, the State
Championships. Of that number, 13 won state titles as well as another 37 reached
the podium to win all-Ohio honors as one of the six best in their weight class
& division in the state. We also saw two of our 2000 M.I.T. teams, St. Paris Graham
and Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary, win state team titles for their schools in
dramatic fashion.
The 2001 Medina Invitational has returned back to our traditional
tournament time between Christmas and New Years this year. The teams and fans
will continue to be patient as Medina H.S. continues to grow with all the new
construction and renovations going on at the school.
As
a result of going back to our usual dates, two of Medina’s traditional teams,
Lakewood St. Edward and Massillon Perry, have returned to the tournament. Both
of these teams, along with St. Paris Graham, all can be found in the different
national rankings polls this season amongst the nations’ best. In Division I,
State top ten finishers Dayton Carroll and Pickerington, along with St. Edward
and Massillon Perry, lead the field
of 11 teams, which includes other strong teams like Hilliard Darby, Hilliard
Davidson, and Toledo Waite. Division II, always one of the toughest at Medina,
sees the return of MIT veterans Uhrichsville Claymont, St. Paris Graham and Oak
Harbor to meet up with the likes of Olmsted Falls, Franklin, Mentor Lake
Catholic and Lisbon Beaver Local. The
Division II field is loaded, with all 17 teams bringing some firepower into the
tournament. The most exciting race may be among the 11 teams in the Division III
group, where newcomer Martins Ferry
brings a strong team to tangle with the likes of Liberty Center, Defiance Tinora,
and Marion River Valley. Here as well you can never count out Cuyahoga Valley
Christian Academy from Cuyahoga Falls as well.
This year’s tournament will have four returning State Champions and
four Ohio Junior High State Champions. The returning high school champs are C.P.
Schlatter of St. Paris Graham (formerly of Columbus St. Francis DeSales), and
Lakewood St. Edward’s trio of Mark Moos,
Ryan Lang and Matt Koz. The Junior High State Champs coming to Medina as
freshmen that will be closely watched are Wade Van Sickle of Liberty Center and
the three-pack from St. Paris Graham: Dustin Schlatter, Jason Marshall and
2-time Jr. High champ Cameron Doggett.
There
are so many more top wrestlers to watch here. This will be one of the most
highly anticipated tournaments in Ohio this year with the list of top

In 1999 we inducted our charter class of the Medina Invitational
Tournament Hall of Fame. This year we will induct the following four gentlemen
into this select group for their contributions to Ohio wrestling: Wrestler Jason
Hartman (Wellington H.S.) posthumously [1990 & 1992 State Champion];
Wrestler Lance Bryson (Medina H.S.) [1982 State Runner-up at 138 lbs. in
Division III and the 2nd four-time placer in MIT history, twice as
champion]; Coach Frank Jayne
(Delaware/Lewis
Center Olentangy, Columbus Bishop Hartley, Elyria and Lakewood St. Edward high
schools): 23 Medina Invitationals as a head and assistant coach [dean of all MIT
coaches], State; and Official Dave
Khoury of Lodi, Ohio [15 Medina Invitationals as a referee, also has been
head coach at Sullivan Black River H.S. for 28 seasons].
These gentlemen will be inducted in ceremonies the evening of Friday,
December 28th, 2001.
A new flourish we added last year and will continue by popularity is the
Parade of Teams, which is like the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympics. Each
team, from 103 to 275, comes into the gymnasium behind their school’s 103 or
lighest weight, who holds the
school’s name up high for all to see. With the stirring music, it is a sight
to see.
We are so lucky that the State of Ohio ranks second in the nation in the
number of young men and women who compete for our high schools all over the
Buckeye State. Ohio, year in and year out, is one of the TOP states in
wrestling! We hope you enjoy seeing some of the best wrestlers Ohio and the
nation has produced on the mats of Medina H.S.
at “The Greatest Show in Wrestling”.
