Big 10 Championships

Results

Ned Heminger
Ohio Wrestling Sport Page

I was fortunate to see the Big 10's this year.  My son went as well (Joel), who is 4, and while he saw some wrestling, he preferred the swimming pool at the hotel.  Actually he spent a majority of the quarterfinals sleeping on the floor and the semi's he entertained himself with a new game we brought with us.  Regardless, I was able to see some very good wrestling and had an enjoyable weekend with my son as well.

Ohio State finished a strong 4th at this year's event.  That is saying something when you consider the 3 teams ahead of them are ranked in the top 4 of the country.  It was great to see them qualify 9 to the national tournament this year, but more importantly seeing 4 wrestlers make it to the finals was even more of an accomplishment.

OSU appeared to have hit a peak at the national duals finishing 2nd and struggled since that weekend.  Fortunately they appeared to be back on top of their game at the Big 10's with solid performances from the entire team.  Rowland's win over No. 1 ranked Mocco of Iowa in the finals was the highlight of  weekend, but another significant win occurred in the quarterfinals with Ratliff defeating second seed Black of Wisconsin to make it to the semi's and ultimately the finals.  It has seemed that Ratliff has been wrestling a grueling schedule from the national duals through the end of the season.  If you look at his weight class, he has had to wrestle nearly everybody in the top 10 of the country and has taken his share of bumps doing it.  However against Black (ranked 4th in the country), Ratliff showed some of that dominant capability that he had at the high school ranks.  While the match ended close (partly because of some marginal calls by the referee) Ratliff showed that he was a step ahead of a quality wrestler at a major event.  We should be seeing some great things from Ratliff over the next couple of years.

It was interesting talking with some non Ohio Sate fans at the tournament.  There is a general recognition that Ohio State has become a team to take seriously and with the Ohio talent that they are now drawing will likely stay near the top.  I for one have enjoyed watching them this past season and look forward to next season.  I can only wish the team good luck as they head to the national tournament.  For 3 of those Buckeyes, that will be their last opportunity to wear the scarlet and gray (Preston, Sessley and Janson) all of whom have been major contributors to the program.
