This is your last opportunity to see Ohio State at home against a national power this season. No. 3 Michigan is coming into town to try and prove that they are a step ahead of the new powerhouse, The Ohio State Buckeyes. It should be an exciting afternoon with both teams well balanced with some of the best talent in the country, not to mention 12 of those wrestlers coming from the Ohio High School ranks. Three of which will be head to head matches (141, 149 and 157). Looking at these three matches from a rankings perspective it would appear that Michigan might be favored to win two of three, however Sessley, Anderson and Janson have been knocking-off higher ranked wrestlers for the past couple of weeks, and could sweep all 3 weight classes if they choose.
133 Ratliff, 149 Anderson and 157 Janson should be the momentum changers of the afternoon. If two of the three can win, then the scale should lean toward the Buckeyes. Of course this assumes the matches OSU loses are close. A major decision loss is similar to being down by 4 in a football game (and a tech fall or pin is almost not recoverable in a match of this level). Ask Tommy Rowlands when he was the final match against, then 3rd ranked, Oklahoma at the National Duals. Ohio State was down by 4 with Tommy wrestling the No. 3 ranked wrestler trying to get his team into the finals. With 15 seconds left, he was able to tie the match to go into overtime, however it appeared the Buckeyes would be headed toward consolations. Miraculously, a takedown turns into a pin and a team victory for Ohio State.
Michigan is bringing two No. 1 ranked wrestlers into this match, 174 Olson (2000 Big 10 champion and 3rd at the NCAA's) and 184 Hrovat (4th at the NCAA's). Ohio State's 174 Hieber and 184 Talamantes both met these opponents last year at the Big 10 Championships. Hieber lost 6-3 in the finals to Olson and Talamantes lost 3-2 for 5th place to Hrovat. It will be very important to Ohio State for both of these wrestlers to perform at the level they did last March.
Expect to see a gut wrenching match with 165 Clark. If there are people out there with double jointed knees, his are triple jointed. But regardless, he is dynamite to watch and is at the top of his game.
And as usual, the two anchorman, Preston and Rowlands. While they may not be ranked No. 1 in the country, they are just as good as Michigan's No. 1 dual. For those of us who have been following the Buckeye program, we have come accustomed to two sure wins at these weights. That is quite a burden, considering the caliber of competition these two meet. I don't think there was a better example of this than the dual with Iowa. Who else would you want to be your last two wrestlers when your down by 6. Preston pushed himself to the end of the match to win by a major handing his teammate another opportunity to make the crowd shout TOMMY - TOMMY - TOMMY. Unfortunately for Rowlands, a touch of the flu bug left him without energy midway thru the match with the No. 3 ranked wrestler. Taking the match into overtime, Rowlands was unable to come out the victor, and the crowd that was chanting his name went silent.
I don't know what the outcome of this match will be. But for certain it will be one heck of a battle, and the young men wearing scarlet and gray are ready for the challenge.
If you able to make it Sunday, plan on arriving 30 to 45 minutes before the match. Tickets are available at the Southeast entrance of St. John Arena (located about 1 mile east on Lane Ave, from 315). Parking is very easy to find on Sunday afternoon.
