! You heard me, smashem, thrashem, locate the biggest sledge hammer
you can find and obliterate every glowing, whining, bright, clicking, moaning, squawking
box you can find. AND I am not talking about televisions sets, unless that is, they are
attached to http:// www. Something.com (AKA: THE WORLD WIDE WAIT). I am
talking about Computers, Cell-phones, PDAs, HPCs, and Pagers. You know the
stuff we spend billions on every year. Why, you may ask, would I want to destroy our
precious little toys? For Most of us the answer is simple, because Theyre Not Worth A Damn. Admit it, oh you may argue the point, calling to all the times your contact manager saves you and how convenient your cell-phone is and how you dont know what you ever did before you got your pager. The advantages of personal technologies is a hotly contested topic in the world of IS. Some point out that productivity gains are realized through the use of technology. And in the grand scheme of things there is no denying the overall impact of technology in manufacturing, financial services and business processes. The question is, at a more fundamental level with the devices we touch, squeeze and pound everyday, have we realized the awesome power of the devices we handle, unequivocally the answer is NO. All the personal technology in this world coupled with all the access to all the bits, bytes, documents, email and what not, doesnt really mean a thing because, to borrow a jazz phrase, " we aint got that swing" ! |
And you wont get it until you
begin to figure out how to REALLY use this stuff to make you more
informed, productive, and happy. If you are tired of being "a slave to gadgets"
and the holes they burn in your pocket, here are a few suggestions to turn your situation
around. READ ABOUT IT. We are ALL guilty of not doing this one. You probably purchased the device to perform a certain function and/or fill a certain need maybe even to save ya some time? Yet you will gladly spend a dozen hours, countless energy and frustration solving a problem that was clearing avoidable if you took the time to read the manual. Oh but thats too hard, well if you think reading the manual is too hard, how far do you think you can get understanding the technology with your only qualification as being Dick Tracy fan? Not very! But dont stop there, read everything you can get your hands on concerning personal technology, information management and Entrepreneurship. TALK ABOUT IT. Ask around. Clients,
Customers, Friends, Family
especially family are sure to have a few suggestions on
how to best optimize this personal technology into your life. Additionally, suggestions on
best use, experiences and repair tips can assist you greatly in your quest to free
yourself from the gadget bondage. User groups, forums, seminars, and trade shows are
excellent sources of information and contacts for a lifetime. Get out there and mingle.
