FILER

Discovering The Power of A Folder
"Using Your Filer"

The Primary function of the "Filer" is to group information together. This sounds so basic, however the "Filer" section of the Zaurus can be a powerful organizer of the information you have stored in your "Z". It provides you with a way to quickly access anything you need by placing it at your finger tips, literally!

The "Filer" (represented by a folder icon on the left side of your Zaurus) works very much like a real File folder in a desk drawer. You can file documents, contact information, outlines, To do's and practically anything else in your Zaurus within a file folder. What I like most about the Filer section is that since it is basically just grouping your existing files together, it consumes no additional memory! But be careful, if you select "DELETE" instead of "Remove" while in one of the filer's folders, you've just deleted your file for good! With that said, lets look at some of the things you can do with this strong tool.

One example is using one of your folders as a quick repository for those commonly used phone numbers. I have included a section called "Using The Filer For Phone Numbers" where I explain this in detail. Another good use for a file folder is as a planner. This actually consist of setting up several folders, TODAY, PENDING, THIS WEEK, NEXT WEEK, LONG-RANGE and MID-RANGE. Then by placing To Do's, Appointments, Projects, and Goals in the appropriate folders you are able to easily manage your long and short term agendas. You can also use it to group together the most commonly used information in your Zaurus. For example, I have a folder called "Info" which I keep all the documents and outlines that I use on a daily basis. It saves me a lot of search time. But by far the most useful functions the Filer section affords is the "Generate A Report" function. You can use the filler to create a special report on any information you want by collecting it into a single folder and choosing the Generate a Report command on the "Edit" pull down menu. This put all the information into a report in document form you can then fax, e-mail or archive that information. Since you can not fax outlines directly, but you can fax a report, this is a great way to send outlines! You should try it!
