Child of CORDALL NORFLEET is:

2. i. AARON2 NORFLEET, b. Abt. 1756, Southampton County, Virginia; d. October 1831, Southampton County, Virginia.

Generation No. 2

2. AARON2 NORFLEET (CORDALL1) was born Abt. 1756 in Southampton County, Virginia, and died October 1831 in Southampton County, Virginia. He married MARIAN ARTIS March 1808 in Southampton County, Virginia. She was born in Southampton County, Virginia.

Notes for AARON NORFLEET:

From the web site of Phil Norfleet (www.members.xoom.com/_XMCM/norfleet1666/aaron.htm):

Cordall Norfleet (d. 1788) of Southampton County, Virginia may have sired a child (Aaron Norfleet) by a slave woman, in about the year 1756. On 28 May 1798, Aaron was freed by Cordall's legitimate male heir, John Norfleet.

Deed of Emancipation:

A transcription of the deed of emancipation is as follows:

To all persons to whom these presents shall come. Know ye that I John Norfleet of the County of Southampton for diverse geed causes and Considerations me thereto moving Have emancipated and set free & by these presents Do emancipate and set free a Negro man named Aaron about forty-two years old whom I have heretofore held as a Slave. And I do for myself, my heirs, executers & Administrators relinquish all right title, claim or interest either to his person or any property he may hereafter acquire in Witness whereof I have hereto set my hand & seal this 28th day of May 1798.

/S/ John Norfleet (Seal)

After gaining his freedom, Aaron acquired land on the south side of Flat Swamp and lived there for many years. In March 1808, Aaron married Marian Artis. Marian belonged to the large and well-known Artis family of free blacks, who mostly lived in the St. Luke's Parish area of Southampton County.

After achieving freedom, Aaron Norfleet made several land acquisitions in the Flat Swamp area. The following summarizes these acquisitions:

25 Feb 1805 Grantor: Frances Harris Grantee: Aaron Norfleet # of Acres: 131 & 1/4 Price: Pound 59/11/03 Book/Page: 11/16

19 Feb 1807 Grantor: Jesse & Ann Holt Grantee: Aaron Norfleet # of Acres: 50 Price: $50 Book/Page: 12/100

28 May 1825 Grantor: Thomas & Sally James Grantee: Aaron Norfleet # of Acres: 100 Price: $426 Book/Page 19/428

The above table indicates that Aaron acquired a total of 281 and 1/4 acres. However the 1831 Southampton County Tax List indicates that Aaron was then the owner of 181 and 1/4 acres of land with a value of $540.75. The tax listing was dated 14 June 1831. I found no record of the sale of the other 100 acres of land.

The 1830 Federal Census gives us some pertinent genealogical information concerning the household of Aaron Norfleet (11 people in total) shortly before his death in 1831.

Under the category of "Free Colored Persons" we find the following for Aaron Norfleet (my comments are in brackets):

1 male age under 10 years (son John?)

1 male age 55-100 (Aaron Norfleet)

3 females age under 10 years

5 females age 10-24

1 female age 36-55 (wife Marian)

The above 1830 Census implies that Aaron and Marian Norfleet had nine children, one son and eight daughters. The names of three of these children are mentioned in Aaron's will, i.e., son John and daughters Martha and Eliza. A study of the Southampton County Tax List for the years 1841-1847 reveal the names of four more of his daughters, i.e., Mariam, Angeline, Evaline and Adaline. The names of the other two daughters are unknown to me. Since their names never show up on the tax lists, they probably died before 1841.

Aaron apparently died in October 1841, under rather suspicious circumstances. Aaron's death occurred shortly after the Nat Turner Revolt, which occurred in August 1831, but before Turner was apprehended and hung in November 1831. Aaron's farm was located less than 2 miles from the farm of Joseph Travis, where Nat Turner had lived. In addition, several members of his wife's family had participated in the Turner insurrection. It was widely believed by the local white people that Turner had been aided in the planning for his "revolt" by the local free Negroes, accordingly, Aaron would have bee a prime suspect in this regard. During the time while Nat Turner was a fugitive, gangs of white vigilantes roamed throughout Southampton County, searching for Turner and seizing any free blacks they ran across, for questioning re: Turner's whereabouts. Many of the free blacks so taken were tortured and sometimes killed. Aaron, who by this time was an elderly man, may have been the victim of such a "vigorous" interrogation!

Aaron's will, dated 20 September 1831, was probated in Southampton County, Virginia on 16 January 1832. The full text of Aaron's will is found later here. Aaron probably died in late October or early November 1831. The following extracts have been taken from the Southampton County Court Minute Book (1810-1835) as follows (my comments are in brackets):

21 November 1831: "James Jackson is appointed curator of Aaron Norfleet dec'd f.n. (free negro) and thereupon the said James Jackson gave bond of security according to law." (Page 126)

22 November 1831: "Ordered that Henry Moore, Nat Jones & Jesse West being sworn & appraise Aaron Norfleet's dec'd est. & make report, etc." (Page 131)

16 January 1832: "Aaron Norfleet's will proved by Thomas James one of the witnesses thereto." (Page 146)

20 February 1832: "Mary Norfleet, widow of Aaron Norfleet, dec'd f.n. appeared in Court and refused to take or accept the provision made for her in her said husband's will and renounced all benefit which she might claim under the same." (Page 156)

15 September 1834: "The said will (of Aaron Norfleet) was fully proved by the oath of James also a witness thereto and ordered to be recorded. And on the motion of James Jackson who made oath and together with James and Henry Moore has securities entered into and acknowledged Bond in the penalty of One Thousand dollars conditioned as the law directs. Certificate is granted him for obtaining Letters of Administration on the estate of the said Aaron Norfleet deceased with his will aforesaid annexed in due form. Test /S/ James Rochelle Clerk"

The Will of Aaron Norfleet, dated 20 September 1831, was probated in Southampton County, Virginia on 16 January 1832. A transcript of this will follows:

Know all men by these presents that I Aaron Norfleet of Southampton County and State of Virginia now sound in mind though infirm in body do make this my last will and testament. I give and bequeath unto Son John two hundred dollars extra of his part of the balance of my property. I then wish the balance of my estate to be equally divided between all the surviving children of me and my present wife Marian except Martha and Eliza. I loan them their part and give it to their body heirs at their death. Given under my hand and seal this 20th day of September 1831.

/S/ Aaron Norfleet (his mark) (Seal)

Children of AARON NORFLEET and MARIAN ARTIS are:

3. i. ANGELINE3 NORFLEET, b. Abt. 1820, Virginia; d. March 20, 1904, Pike County, Ohio.

ii. JOHN NORFLEET, b. Abt. 1827; m. MALINDA J. ARTHUR (Source: IGI.), February 21, 1848, Jackson County, Ohio (Source: IGI.); b. Abt. 1828.

Notes for JOHN NORFLEET:

In the 1850 Pike County, Ohio census John and wife Malinda are found living next door to Adam and Angeline Artis. I believe this lends credence to the probability of John's being Angeline's brother. At this point the last name is spelled Norflet.

Marriage information regarding John and Malinda was found on the FamilySearch web site. This information needs to be verified.

iii. MARTHA NORFLEET.

iv. ELIZA NORFLEET.

v. MARIAM NORFLEET.

vi. EVALINE NORFLEET.

vii. ADALINE NORFLEET.

Generation No. 3

3. ANGELINE3 NORFLEET (AARON2, CORDALL1) was born Abt. 1820 in Virginia, and died March 20, 1904 in Pike County, Ohio. She married ADAM ARTIS March 05, 1835 in Northampton County, North Carolina . He was born Abt. 1813 in Jackson, Virginia, and died October 06, 1879 in Pike County, Ohio.

Notes for ANGELINE NORFLEET:

Marriage records for Northampton County, NC show Angeline's name as Angy Norphlet. Adam is listed as Adam Arits. The bond date is March 5, 1835 therefore the marriage date listed here may be slightly inaccurate. the Marriage is listed as record #01-1003 witnessed by J.R. Drake. This is bond #000089210.

By 1880 census Angeline's name is written as Artist as are James W. and Nancy's. They are both living with Angeline and are listed as her grandchildren. Angeline is now listed as age 60 and James W. is 17; Nancy 12.

1900 census shows Angeline living alone in Pike Co., Jackson Township. Angeline lists both parents as being born in Virginia.

Angeline's death confirmed from Pike County Death Records. Died in Linn, Ohio. Death was due to "old age". Death reported by George J. Walker.

Notes for ADAM ARTIS:

In Ohio River Survey, Congressional Lands-Pike County, found Adam Artis purchased 40 acres November 7, 1848 and another 40 acres June 2, 1852.

In 1860 Adam and Angeline are living in Pike Co. Ohio. Adam lists age as 40 as does Angeline. Adam is noted to be a farmer. Living in the household is Aaron and James. It is interesting to note that next door is a family with the last name of Vance. (James would marry a Cassie Vance but she is not listed in this household.) In this census Adam reportedly owns real estate valued at $400 and personal estate valued at $225.

1870 census shows Adam living in Pike Co., Ohio. He reports being a farmer. In the household at this time is Angeline Artis age 49, Wm. Henry Artis, age 5 and Nancy Artis, age 2. Next door is Cassie Artis who has in her household James W. Artis, age 7. I believe that Cassie is Cassie Vance who married James Artis, son of Adam and Angeline. It appears that James is dead and two of the grandchildren may be living with Adam and Angeline.

Children of ANGELINE NORFLEET and ADAM ARTIS are:

4. i. SUSAN4 ARTIS, b. Abt. 1834, Virginia; d. March 22, 1880, Pike County, Ohio.

5. ii. JAMES ARTIS, b. Abt. 1837, Virginia; d. Bef. 1870.

6. iii. AARON ARTIS, b. Abt. 1840, Virginia.

Generation No. 4

4. SUSAN4 ARTIS (ANGELINE3 NORFLEET, AARON2, CORDALL1) was born Abt. 1834 in Virginia, and died March 22, 1880 in Pike County, Ohio. She married GEORGE WASHINGTON CROCKER December 20, 1852 in Pike County, Ohio, son of HARRISON CROCKER and POLLY ?. He was born 1836 in Southampton County, Virginia.

Notes for GEORGE WASHINGTON CROCKER:

The 1860 census of Pike County lists George as 25 years old. Occupation, farmer. Real estate valued at $600 and personal real estate as $700. In the household at that time were Susan, Josephine, and a 17 year old by the name of Louisa. Both Josephine and Louisa are listed as being born in Ohio. All in this household are listed as black.

George Washington Crocker, son of Harrison Crocker, was born in Southampton County VA in 1826, and for nineteen years was a resident of a slave state, but was never subjected to the treatment imposed on others of his nationality. In 1846 he came to Pike County, where slavery was unknown, and in 1860 he purchased his present farm of 225 acres in Jackson Township. Politically he is a Republican, and a strong supporter of the principles of his party. He is a member of the United Brethren Church. He was married in 1853 to Susan Artis, who died in 1880, leaving one daughter: Josephine, now the wife of Louis Jones. In 1882, he married Mary Lewis. they have one daughter: Jennie India Elizabeth. Mrs. Crocker is a member of the Baptist Church. (From the History of Lower Scioto Valley Ohio.)

Children of SUSAN ARTIS and GEORGE CROCKER are:

7. i. JOSEPHINE S.5 CROCKER, b. August 17, 1853, Pike County, Ohio; d. August 25, 1895, Roxabel, Ohio.

ii. CHARLES CROCKER, b. Abt. 1867, Ohio.

5. JAMES4 ARTIS (ANGELINE3 NORFLEET, AARON2, CORDALL1) was born Abt. 1837 in Virginia, and died Bef. 1870. He married CASSIE VANCE.

Notes for CASSIE VANCE:

In the census records of Ross County, Ohio 1880 Cassie (Artist) is living with William H. and a Elizabit Chevis. Cassie is 31 years old and listed as a day worker. William is 15 and listed as a stable boy. Elizabit is listed as 24 years old and a domestic in boarding house.

Children of JAMES ARTIS and CASSIE VANCE are:

8. i. JAMES W.5 ARTIS, b. Abt. 1863, Pike County, Ohio; d. May 25, 1894, Pike County, Ohio.

iii. NANCY ARTIS, b. Abt. 1868, Pike County, Ohio.

6. AARON4 ARTIS (ANGELINE3 NORFLEET, AARON2, CORDALL1) was born Abt. 1840 in Virginia. He married (1) ELIZABETH RAGLAND 1862 in Pike County, Ohio. He married (2) ELIZABETH RAGLIN January 13, 1862 in Pike County, Ohio.

Notes for AARON ARTIS:

See Adam Artis notes re: 1860 census. Aaron is listed as a day laborer.

Am curious as to whether Aaron could have been known as "Zeb." If so he could very well be the father of Theodore Artis. Death information about Theodore indicates his parents were Zeb Artis and Betsy Raglin. Had previously assumed that Theodore was the son of James because he was found in his household in census records but am not certain of that.

Notes for ELIZABETH RAGLAND:

Pension records list: Lizzie, WO-999 316, filed 6 Jan 1913 widow of Wesley Jackson of Co. E, 68th US Col'd Inf.

In some records, such as the marriage license with Aaron Artis, Elizabeth is listed as Raglin.

Marriage Notes for AARON ARTIS and ELIZABETH RAGLAND:

Note that a marriage license was issued but at this time I cannot confirm whether the marriage actually took place.

Child of AARON ARTIS and ELIZABETH RAGLAND is:

10. i. THEODORE5 ARTIS, b. June 1868, Pike County, Ohio.

Josephine was a dressmaker. She met Lewis Henry at the United Brethern in Christ Church at Carr's Run, Pike County, Ohio.

Died of Remittent Fever. Buried at Greenlawn Cemetery, Frankfort, Ohio. (From A History of the Artis, Boone, Charlton, Jones, Reynolds and White Families by Madelene Jones Norris)

Lewis Henry was 9 years old when his partents brought him to Ohio. He was educated in the public schools at Frankfort and Oberlin College where he prepared himself for teaching. He followed his vocation for 35 years, teaching in Pike County and Ross County, Ohio public schools. While he was in Pike County, he was affiliated with the United Brethern in Christ Church at Carr's Run. This is where he met Josephine.

After he established his residence in Roxabel, Ohio, Lewis was a faithful member of the Bethel AME Church, Frankfort, Ohio. During his free time, he assisted his brother, George, with their slaughter house business in Frankfort. Wherever Lewis went, he carried an umbrella, basket and denim apron. His first wife, Josephine was a dressmaker. Mary Alice, his second wife, was in ill health for a number of years.

She was born May 01, 1882 in Pike County, Ohio, and died January 09, 1944 in Pike County, Ohio.

Notes for WILLIAM HENRY ARTIS:

1870 census shows Wm. Henry Artis living with Adam and Angeline Artis in Pike Co., Ohio. Also in this household is Nancy Artis. Next door is Cassie Artis who is living with James W. who is age 7.

1900 census shows W.H. Artis is shown living in Pike Co., Jackson Township with Silas Wright.  W.H. lists March 1865 as birth-date.  W.H. is listed as laborer. He reports being a widower.

1920 census shows William living in Madison Co., Ohio (he's listed as age 60?). Living with him is Alvin Artis, son (he's listed as age 22?).

According to Herman Artis, William was blind.

From the obituary stated that William died at the home of Nelson Artis, who lived on the Clay-Tooker Farm approximately 1 1/2 miles north of Woodstock, Ohio. He was reportedly blind for 11 years. His funeral was held at the Carrs Run Methodist Church. Burial was to be at Carrs Run.

Notes for BELL MAHALA LETT:

Additionally there were four infants born to Pearlie and Bell who appear to have dies before their first year.

Children of WILLIAM ARTIS and LAURA BROWN are:

i. MARY6 ARTIS, b. May 1891.

Notes for MARY ARTIS:

Mary is listed in the 1900 census of Pike County, Ohio as Mary Brown, living in the household of Elias and Sarah Brown along with Nelson, Alvin and Ora Artis. She is noted as the granddaughter of Elias. Could it be that she was born to Laura Alice (Brown) Artis before she married William Henry?

11. ii. NELSON ELIAS ARTIS, b. November 17, 1894, Pike County, Ohio; d. November 15, 1984, Madison County, Ohio (London).

iii. ALVIN ARTIS, b. August 1896, Pike County, Ohio.

1900 census show Alvin living in Pike Co., Oh with Elias Brown. Shows Alvin's age as 3 and Alvin as Elias's grandson.

iv. ORA ARTIS, b. December 1898.

Notes for ORA ARTIS:

1900 census shows Ora living with Elias Brown. Ora is listed as age 2 and listed as Elias's grandson.

Nelson reportedly said that one of his brothers went south. He seems to think that this brother went to North Carolina. This was related by Herman Artis.

10. THEODORE5 ARTIS (AARON4, ANGELINE3 NORFLEET, AARON2, CORDALL1) was born June 1868 in Pike County, Ohio. He married FRANCES WHITE.

Notes for THEODORE ARTIS:

1900 census shows Theodore and Frances living in Franklin County, Ohio on Leonard Ave.

1900 census also shows Sylvester Jackson (born August 1882 in Ohio) and John M. Jackson (born June 1853 in Ohio) living in this household. Relationship is unclear.

1910 census shows Theodore living in Franklin County with Frances. In the household at this time are Vernon, Samuel, Earl, Elmer as sons and Herbert White as brother-in-law.

There is at this time much confusion as to the parents of Theodore. He appears in the household of James and Cassie Artis in 1860 but on his death records, Earl Artis indicates that Zeb Artis and Betsey Raglin are his parents. It is true that in both the 1870 and 1880 census records, Theodore is living with Wesley and Elizabeth Jackson alone with William, b. abt. 1864, Cassie O. (male) b. abt. 1866, Earnest born about 1871, and Pearlie b. abt. 1874. This requires further investigation.

Children of THEODORE ARTIS and FRANCES WHITE are:

i. CLYDE6 ARTIS.

ii. VERNON ARTIS, b. April 1892.

iii. SAMUEL C. ARTIS, b. March 1894.

iv. MARY ELIZABETH ARTIS, b. 1895.

Notes for MARY ELIZABETH ARTIS:

Mary is no longer listed on the census info in 1900. Have confirmation from Ohio University library that she died between 1888-1903.

v. EARL ARTIS, b. Abt. 1902.

vi. ELMER T. ARTIS, b. Abt. 1904.
