kometboy's misc. ramblings

Welcome to my home page. I will admit that I am starting to be classed as an 'old-timer'. In the words of the late great Ayrton Senna, 'I don't care'. I have a confession to make. I am no longer on strike against the NHL or MLB. I follow the Cincinnati Reds and my old favorite NHL hockey teams: the Dallas Stars, the Chicago Blackhawks, and the Edmonton Oilers (coincidentally teams that Paul Shmyr once played for). And I can't forget the Columbus Blue Jackets, who are good for our city and right now have the best coach in hockey, Hitch. I never was on strike against the Fort Wayne Komets, my favorites, and I still will always love the Cleveland Crusaders of the WHA, who can never really be replaced. And I will always have memories of my favorite player, a former Komet and the captain and backbone of the Cleveland Crusaders: Paul Shmyr (The Captain), who also was the captain of the Oilers and North Stars. And yes, KJ, it is about time I put my Stars page back up.

Changes will be forthcoming. I just haven't been able to work on this till now. Katy has been adopted into our family this summer. She does not have to compete with the memory of Komet. She can be herself. Komet will never be forgotten. But we can love Katy for being Katy. She will have her own page and we'll keep Komet's. I'll revise this section as soon as I can. Meanwhile, here is the original text: I just had to do this. I couldn't leave out my faithful Akita named Komet. (I wonder how he got that name?). Komet balances very well on the ice, but he's not really interested in hockey. He does do his best to perpetually remind us that life with an Akita is never boring. He has been very interested in what I did before he came along, so I added a history section so he can check it any time. Komet also likes contemporary Christian music, so I've got a page under construction for music for the KING OF KINGS. Komet's favorite Christian artists right now are Michael Tait, Selah, and Christy Nockels.

Just a quick note, this morning (September 12, 2005) Komet required emergency surgery for gastric torsion, a life threatening condition that large deep chested dogs can suffer. Komet survived the surgery, but is not out of the woods yet. He is being closely monitored by the very capable staff at the Animal Care Center at Sawmill in Columbus OH who made a very quick and accurate diagnosis and worked very hard to give Komet the best care possible. A big thank you to all at ACC from Komet and from me. He would like to thank Dr. Jason Thorn for this additional time that he can be with his family.

Today (February 7, 2006) is Komet's birthday. He is nine years old. I still remember very clearly the night he was born. It seems like yesterday.

Komet has been having a rough time. He has been diagnosed with severe valve damage to his heart, and has an arrhrythmia. He is undergoing treatment, and is taking many medications. But his wonderful attitude has not changed even though physically he has slowed down a lot.

Thanks to Dr. Sikorska, Komet's cardiologist, and the rest of the team at MedVet here in Columbus, Komet has regained much of his cardiac function. His valves are of course still damaged, but much of the swelling has decreased. Enough can not be said about the short term and long term plans of treatment which were developed for Komet by Dr. Sikorska. He is now over 6 months past his 10th birthday, when all signs pointed to him not having a chance of even getting a few months past his ninth.

Komet has crossed the Rainbow Bridge. He remained such a loving and loyal akita to the end. He cannot be replaced. He was 10 years, 9 months, 28 days old. Thanks to Dr. Sikorska, we had an extra 15 months with him due to her excellent treatment. Komet Nikolai 02/07/1997 - 12/05/2007

Personal History: Just for you, Katy.

I added this section so Komet could see what I did before he came into the family. I'll leave it up for Katy. She is so new to us that she knows little about us.
