Rapier

Signore Lorenzo di Calabria will be marshalling the fencing list.

Encampment VIII will again be a Regional Rapier War Practice.

*City Siege Tourney:*
While the battle rages at the city wall, a burglar robs the empty houses under the guise of a raider. As the burglar climbs in the window of this not-so-empty house, the resident takes up a sword in defense. The burglar only wants to rob, not to murder his neighbors. The resident is afraid to fight, and wants only to keep him at bay until the local army comes to the rescue.
This will be a round robin tourney. Each pair will fight twice in a row so the both get a chance in each role. Both fighters will begin with single sword, but may pick up other weapons inside the room if they want to (and are authorized). Each fight lasts until someone dies, the burglar escapes, or the soldiers arrive (after a random and unannounced amount of time between 10 and 60 seconds)
The resident wins if s/he kills the burglar or time expires.
The burglar wins is s/he escapes with at least one piece of treasure.
The winner will receive points as follows:

Loser is healthy Loser is injured Loser is dead
Winner is healthy 10 8 3
Winner is injured 7 5 2

If both die, the resident gets 1 point for ridding the city of a burglar. If the burglar escapes with more than one treasure, s/he will receive an extra point per extra treasure. If the burglar escapes with no treasure, both fighters get 5 points (they're both happily alive, but failed to meet their goals) minus two points if they injure the opponent, minus another three if they are injured themselves. So if they are both injured and the burglar escapes without treasure, no one gets any points. Knee walking, body contact, and death from behind are all allowed, but everyone must use extreme caution to prevent any possible injury.
Prize: The winner will keep some of the treasure!

*Beowulf Tourney:*
Since the story of Beowulf is one of the oldest and best known stories about Danes under siege, we'll have a tourney based on it.
This will be a bear pit, so the winner stays for the next fight. Before entering the list, each fighter will be assigned a random character to portray:
Beowulf: Use single sword or sword and shield.
Grendel: Can only be killed by a draw cut to either arm, but treats hand/leg wounds and thrusts to the arm as usual.
Grendel's Mother: Can only be killed by a draw cut or thrust to the neck or head, but can be wounded like normal.
The Dragon: Anyone who kills the Dragon also dies.
All characters except Beowulf may use any weapons they choose (if authorized)
2 points are awarded per win
1 point is awarded per loss
0 points are awarded for a double kill (Note that killing the Dragon is not a double kill)
Prize: Autographed photos of the four characters! These are a one-of-a-kind collector's item, never to be offered again!

Archery

Master Ian Gourdan of Glen Awe and Mistress Arwenna of Kelsley will be our Marshals of Archery.

We will be challenging archers and champions with peri-oid targets,
realistic animals for the woods walk, and a real lifelike mock riding horse
for those who always wondered what horse archery might be like.

(not a moving target, moving archers...)

A Challenge from the South

Unto their Excellencies Catriona and Alexander, and Their Archery
Champion Tetsuo Akira, I bid thee greetings.
For too long have the warriors of the North Oaken region stolen the spotlight from those of us with a keen eye and a swift arrow. It is time for us to focus on improving our skills and growing our numbers so that in the coming Wars against the Tiger, our arrows blot out the sun and chase them from the range. To that end, and with the blessings of Their Excellencies Lamorak and Isabeau, I am informing you of my intent to muster the archers of the Middle Marches and invade your event known as Encampment VIII: Siege the Dane in your Marche of Three Towers. It is my intention to challenge your Archers in brotherly competition to best us in number and skill and I personally wish to lay down a challenge to your Archery Champion that he face me on the range that day. It is my hope in so doing we shall begin to sow the seeds of increased pride and popularity in archery, and begin to encourage rivalries to further the brotherhood amongst our Baronies.

YIS,
Lord Gwalchmai ap Bledig,
Barony of the Middle Marches, Archery Champion

Thrown Weapons

Our Thrown Weapons Marshal is THL Quentin MacGowan.  He is planning to have the Plague Rat Competition II.  You can try your skill at Cut the Hawser to kill the rats climbing off the ship.  There will be brand new targets for spear and knife throwing, with a Godzilla Rat for spears and a Friend and Foe setup for knives.

Table-top Siege Weapon Competition

1) Ammunition shall be a standard sized “Jet-Puff” marshmallow

2) No entry shall measure more than 2 feet in any direction or plane.

3) There shall be three prizes. There will be one award each for the most period appearance, longest distance, and accuracy. This rule is subject to change if I receive advance notice that there will be enough entries to divide the distance category into three divisions. One division each will be created for the general categories of catapults, ballistas and trebuchets.

4) A folding table will be set up (most likely it will be a standard six-foot folding table). For the distance and accuracy portions of the contest, the entry may be set anywhere on the table, prior to firing. Only one entry will be on the firing table at a time.

5) Any shot during which the siege engine breaks, will be disqualified. No re-shots will be permitted.

6) The marshmallow ammunition may not be altered in any way prior to taking a shot. The contest organizers will provide the marshmallow ammunition.

7) There will be two firing rounds. The first round will determine the distance competition. Each entry will get three shots. The entry that sends a marshmallow the longest distance down range from the table is the winner. All distances will be measured from the table edge.

8) After the distance competition the judges will place a small marker at the short, middle and long distances as determined above. Each entry may take three shots at the marker of their choice (must be declared prior to firing). The entry that lands a marshmallow closest to their declared marker will be the winner.

9) For the most period appearance contest, the entries must have been used in the prior two contests to determine that they are functional models.

10) A display area for the entries will be arranged with the site autocrat.

11) Documentation is not required. However, documentation may be used to justify a period design to the judges.

12) Judging for most period will be by populace vote

Directions for building an onager may be found here.
