A Tale Told In Drabbles
(By Penny A. Proctor. Inspired by earlier spoilers for the upcoming episode "Human Error." To paraphrase the marvelous Camille West – I'll fix you, TPTB; I'll write a story.)
1. Holodeck 1
"Oh. My. God."
Seven jumped, her face flushed. "F-freeze program. Captain, I can explain…"
The Captain simply folded her arms.
"I wanted to explore my sexuality. Commander Chakotay has always been a good teacher."
Janeway studied the very naked hologram. "Interesting. How did you develop the specs for this image?"
Seven slumped. "From his medical file."
"Really?" With a final look at the hologram, she turned to leave.
"Captain? Am I not in trouble?"
"Later." She smiled. "Right now I've got some exploring of my own to do. It's time to find out what I've been missing all these years."
2. Captain's Quarters
"That … that was worth waiting seven years for."
"Just wait. You kind of caught me by surprise."
"You are far too modest."
"Kathryn, I haven't waited all these years because of modesty."
"And I didn't come to you now just because Seven had you naked in the holodeck."
"She – what?"
"You heard me. A pretty good replica of you, at that."
"You're joking."
"Nope. She thought you would be a good choice to help her explore her sexuality."
"Oh. Well, it's hard to be offended by that. And?"
"Seven was right."
"She usually is. Care to go exploring again?"
3. Chief Engineer's Office
"You didn't." B'Elanna gaped. "Chakotay?"
"He seemed an appropriate choice, Lieutenant. I do not wish to elaborate further. What I do not understand is why the Captain did not discipline me immediately. Creating a hologram of a shipmate without their knowledge is a breach of regulations."
"Damn straight. What did she say?"
"She said she would see to it later; she had explorations of her own to conduct."
B'Elanna laughed. "You just may have done it, Seven."
"Done what?"
"Played matchmaker."
"I do not understand."
"I'll explain over lunch. Oh – you remembered to delete the hologram, right?"
"No. Should I?"
4. Captain's Quarters
"Yes, Tuvok?"
"My apologies, Captain. I need to speak with you and the Commander."
"Coincidentally, the Commander is here. Go ahead."
"A holographic representation of the Commander just propositioned Ensign Jenkins on holodeck one."
Chakotay choked.
"She states that the programming is quite sophisticated. According to holodeck records, an hour elapsed between the appearance of the replica and her report."
Kathryn choked.
"Shall I delete the program?"
"Yes," said Chakotay.
"No," said Kathryn.
"Yes," said Chakotay.
"I'll take care of it myself," the Captain said. "We'll discuss this later, Tuvok."
"Understood, Captain."
"Kathryn-"
"For away missions. In case I'm lonely."
5. The Mess Hall, Later
"Hello, Commander."
"Ensign Jenkins." He waited until she passed. "Did you see that look?"
"I probably look the same."
"You don't. Much."
"Hel-lo, Commander."
"Jenny."
Kathryn stifled a laugh. "Did she just wink at you?"
"Affirmative."
"I guess the word is out."
"Why are you smiling? This isn't good for discipline in the ranks."
"Great for morale, though."
"You're enjoying this, aren't you?"
"Perhaps."
Neelix came over. "This is for the Commander. Crème brulee, from a secret admirer."
"That's it," Kathryn said. "The hologram goes."
"Because of dessert?"
"Because I am the Captain, and I don't share. Except crème brulee."
6. Astrometrics, The Next Day
"My holodeck privileges are suspended and I must assist Crewman Herren in Phaser Relay indefinitely."
"Ouch." Harry winced. "Too cruel."
"I would prefer to be assigned to waste extraction maintenance."
"Seven, if you wanted to – I mean, if you wanted to, you could have asked. Plenty of us would have been willing to help you. Me, for instance."
"Thank you, but I do not wish to begin an ongoing relationship at this time. I did not want to risk a misunderstanding with a shipmate. You are not the type for a 'one night stand.'"
He sighed. "I could have been."
