Loose Square 4-Strand

Any kind of braid can be done as a loose braid.  In this example, I employ the square 4-strand, which I think looks particularly nice in this form.  Learn the french and square 4-strand braids before attempting this.

Repeat this mantra while making a square 4-strand: Under two, back over one.

Directions:

  1. Learn how to do a square 4-strand braid.
  2. Braid as for normal square 4-strand to the back of the crown of the head.
  1. Pull the hair GENTLY straight out from the head.
  2. Add the next section of hair, pulling so that the hair is gently taut to where your hand is, away from the head.
  1. Continue adding small sections and braiding in the square 4-strand pattern, each time pulling the added section out to where your hand is.  For this braid I actually kept my hand a little too close to the head at first.
  2. Tie off the braid with a rubber band or other hair fastener.
