GUARD
and ARMY
Guard
Town Guard:
The guard is a group of soldiers separate from the army. The primary purpose of
the guard will be to protect the city
at all times. For this reason the guard will be made up of those willing to
defend the city to insure the safety of the citizens. The guard will also be in
charge of protecting the council and those associated with the council. The
guard will patrol the city in watch of invasions in times of peace as well as in
times of war. In times of war the guard may also be grouped with the army to
help defend the city.
The ranking system used by the
guard will differ from that of the army. Not only this, but the guard will be
much smaller in number as their purpose is to protect the city streets of Dirge
while the army will march on enemies as well as protect the surrounding areas of
Dirge. Two members of the guard will be given the rank of Lord Marshals and be
given a position on the council of advisors to the Minister of Defense. These
Lord Marshals will be the voice of the guard.
The position of Lord Marshal is to
be filled by two members of the honor guard, one a ranger and the other a
paladin. Each Lord Marshal will command one company of honor guard and three
companies of patrolmen. They will command the patrolmen through the captains.
Honor Guard:
The
honor guard is a special military unit designed to champion the Council of
Dirge. This unit will be composed of Paladins and Rangers who meet the most
stringent of requirements. Only the purest and most chivalrous warriors may be
recruited to serve the council in this capacity. The honor guard will have to
swear allegiance to the council and to the cause in which they serve.
The honor guard will be commanded
by one of the two Lord Marshals of the guard. The primary goal of the honor
guard will be to protect the Council of Dirge in times of need. For this reason
each member of the honor guard will be assigned a council member to protect in
times of danger. The guard must aid the council member to whom they are assigned
and watch over their safety. The honor guard will also be in charge of
protecting the council during meetings with other officials if there is a
concern for their safety. If in a high risk situation, the honor guard will be
the only unit permitted to be present in audiences with the council.
The duties of the honor guard also
include the role of champions of the council. The honor guard will be of the
knights of the council and will have the honor to compete in contests of skill.
If at any time the council is challenged or insulted, it may be asked of a
member of the honor guard to take the challenge in place of the council member.
This will not always be expected but will be in cases where the council member
is unable to retaliate against the challenger. Sportsmanlike conduct is of the
utmost importance and will be required in all members of the honor guard,
therefore all challenges must be just.
A member of the honor guard must
demonstrate that they are pure in heart and soul at all times, be this through
actions or words. This includes times in which they may be away from the council
or working under the council. Due to this reason, new members will have an
evaluation period during which they will be watched closely. If at any time the
member shows signs that he or she does not possess the aforementioned qualities
they will be placed back in their previous position under the council or
military, yet due to the difficulty and high honor code in this unit, the
demotion will not be dishonorable. If a full member of the honor guard goes so
far as to break the honor code, they will be placed back in their previous
position and reduced in rank, if the member steps down willingly, the reduction
may not be as severe as if they were to be discharged from the unit.
Due to the rigid requirements for
joining the honor guard, the position is one of the highest and most honorable
positions within the guard. It is also one of the most difficult positions to
maintain as strict guidelines must be followed.

The goal of the army, unlike the guard, is not only for the defense of the
city of Dirge, but also for the overall defense of the surrounding area and the
northern border of the province of Zoluren. At times of need the army will be
used along with the guard to better defend the city. This will be the case when
the guard is unable to defend the city on its own. If the enemy falls back or
retreats, or is found advancing, the army will be sent to stop the threat while
the guard protects the city. At times of peace the army will train and protect
the border as a whole.
Army Forces
The ground forces are the primary attack group of the army. These troops will
be located on the front lines divided into two sections: front line and ranged
specialists. The front line will be the melee fighters which will do
the hand to hand combat. The ranged specialists will utilize their skill with
ranged weapons and magic to attack from the rear of the battlefield. These
two forces will also providing cover for the runners, which are the communication
specialists between
the commanders and the troops.
Runners- These
persons are the connection between the campaign leaders and the
troops when fighting is ongoing. Composed of members of various guilds, their
primary
purpose is to communicate to the Generals on the battlefield the battle plans
and strategies. They can also be
runners for armor, weapons, herbs, and other necessities. The runners will also include those who remove the
wounded and deceased from the battle field to be tended to by the medical units.
Tacticians-
Military leaders fall into this bracket.
These will be the intellectuals of the order and consist of teachers and
planners. It is their job to make sure those in the order are knowledgeable of
the history and other vital aspects of the enemy. During small campaigns these people will fight
on the battlefield along with the troops they command. With large campaigns,
where the battlefront lies in multiple areas, they will have a centralized
location where they can better follow the advancements of
the enemy and layout a play of attack and defense.
Scouts-
This group is composed of military personnel sent to gain vital information to
aid in the planning of strategy. These persons will be utilized in
situations where the enemy has yet to be identified or areas that are unknown.
They must be quick and resourceful and for this reason they will be made up of rangers and
thieves, or members of guilds who can move about unseen.
Trackers-
A specialty group composed of rangers and mages who’s job it is to track the targets given to them by military officials.
They may also be used to track down
people for help or for information.
Infantry- Foot soldiers who fight in the front lines. Close ranged fighters.
Bowmen- Long
range troops who fight behind the infantry. They attempt to kill or
injure from a distance using ranged or thrown weapons. While they will attempt to stay out
of melee there are times when they may face combat in close quarters and
therefore will also need to be adept
in the skill of melee fighting.
Mages-
This force can maneuver between the bowmen and infantry. These are the warriors who use their
magical skills both offensively and defensively. They have the option of
fighting in close quarters or staying in the back casting spells. If
necessary other groups will be used to protect them.
Draggers-
Their duty is to drag the wounded or the dead that have fallen in
combat. They drag them to a designated place where empaths and clerics are waiting so
they can heal the person's body and spirit. Draggers must keep a constant vigil
of what is going on at all times or lives may be lost that might have been
spared.
Healers-
Their duty is to take care of the wounded. They will be stationed near
combat grounds for quicker relief of troops but at the same time being far
enough away to be out off immediate danger. This group consists of empaths and
others who can apply herbs on the wounded. Herbalists will treat smaller wounds while
empaths treat the critically wounded.
Clerics-
Clerics will be divided into two groups. One group will be with the empaths,
praying to the gods to grant the lifeless a favor and protecting their memories
and restoring their bodies. Empaths and clerics will of necessity work
closely with one another and try to find a working area with mana that is
sufficient for both.
The second group of Clerics will march into combat with the
troops and
say a solemn prayer to the gods asking them to protect the troops during the
battle. Once the prayer is finished they may remain to assist in combat,
especially if those being defended against have undead among their forces. As they fight, they will say a quick prayer for the
wounded or dead before they are dragged off the field. This is a crucial part of
the clerics duties. Without a prayer to the troops, there
is little hope in winning a battle.
