The OATH and DICTUM

Thus shall one take the oath of fidelity:

By the Gods and the esteemed Council, before whom this covenant is sacred, and with whom I entreat sufficient witness, I, <name>, do hereby solemnly agree to adhere to the rights and responsibilities which are governed by my acceptance into the embrace of the council.

I attest that these rights and responsibilities are self-evident and that at no time will I misconstrue their meaning, nor will I distort their content for mine own purposes.  I confirm that my motivations as governed by mine own being are in accord with these rights and responsibilities.

To reflect unyielding loyalty to the order, the counsel and the people whom it serves.

To uphold the utmost sincerity to the council and its constituents.

To be faithful and true, according to the laws of the Gods and the order of the world.

To conduct myself in an honorable and selfless manner, respecting all of which the Gods have created.

To uphold the utmost accountiblility for mine own deeds and decisions and to understand how these actions affect those other than myself.

To maintain my heart and mind as open conduits such that I may listen to those whom require an ear and that I may see that which our limited perspective may not normally have sight to see.

To never transact, with will or action, through word or deed, anything which is unpleasing to the council, on condition that it will hold to me as I shall deserve it, and that it will perform everything as it was in our agreement when I submitted myself to its service.

Illustrations are from LES TRÈS RICHES HEURES DU DUC DE BERRY (Months of the Year) 15th Century, Musée Condé, Château de Chantilly, France.  It is without doubt the ultimate calendar ever created. About the year 1410, The Duke of Berry entrusted Paul Limbourg and his brothers with the illumination of the Très Riches Heures. Never before had a calendar been illuminated with such magnificent full page miniatures, depicting scenes in the life of the court  and the surrounding countryside. 75 years were spent on producing this unique piece and the Duke himself did not live to see the completion of his book.
