We are still working on the details of the 2008 schedule of events and field trips for the Central Ohio Cactus and Succulent Society, as we await confirmations from speakers and venues - we will typically also add a few last minute special events which may be of interest to our members, but which may not be part of our "official" schedule of programs. So please check this page frequently for the latest additions, and updates. I hope to have the majority of the "gaps" filled within the next few weeks

March

Sunday March 30th is the show and sale of the Midwest Cactus and Succulent Society, at the Cleveland Botanical Garden in Cleveland Ohio. The show and sale officially begins at noon: sales are quite brisk, so we recommend arriving early to get the first picks of plants offered by members of the Cleveland Society.

Plan to take a tour of the new facility which features two distinct biomes, the Madagascar room which features representative plants from both the Madagascan rainforest, and Madagascar’s thorn forests from which many of Madagascar’s endemic succulents originate. The second biome is the Costa Rican cloud forest, which features the distinct flora of an upland rainforest.

This show usually coincides with the Cleveland Botanical Gardens’ "Orchid Mania Blossoms and Butterflies", and usuall

April

Our April meeting (Wednesday, April 16th) will feature  a tour of The OSU Biological Sciences Greenhouse Facility led by Joan Leonard. We also hope that George Keeney, Curator of the OSU Insectary will also be available to give us a tour of that facility.

May

Saturday May 3rd:The Kingwood Center in Mansfield will be holding a plant show and sale on Saturday, May 3rd. All members are encouraged to attend (and participate) in this show. Tables will be provided for members of the Midwest Cactus and Succulent Society, and the Central Ohio Cactus and Succulent Society to distribute information about our respective clubs, and to sell plants. There is no charge to participate in this event, and all of the proceeds of our sales will go to the members and their respective societies.  In years past, other participating societies included the local Orchid, Gourd, and Lily societies. There will also be a number of independent vendors, as well a a large perennial sale which benefits the Kingwood Center. Speakers will be scheduled throughout the day, including the presentation "Hot Plants For Cool Gardens: Hardy Succulents for the Garden" to be presented by member Bruce Brethauer.

Parking and admission are free. If you go, be sure to visit the Succulent room, which is small but packed full of plants. Also, continue thru the rest of the rooms until you reach the greenhouse, where very nice plants are for sale. Last year we used this show as a transfer point for the plants that Bill Hendricks provides for our show. There are usually 12-14 flats of plants; any help transporting these would be greatly appreciated.

Saturday and Sunday May 24th and 25th (with setup on Friday May 23rd) the Franklin Park Conservatory: This is the weekend of our annual show and sale. We also request that members make a special effort to help out at the sales table at this event. Pease contact Bruce Brethauer with a list of any plants which you may be offering for sale.

Wednesday June 18th: 6:30 pm at the OSU Wetlands Research Facility on Kinnear Road for our annual summer picnic. Please note that in June, we NOT will be meeting at the Conservatory. Wednesday August 20th: 7:30 pm at the Franklin Park Conservatory - Program to be announced

September

Saturday, September 17th:

Saturday September 20th (?): The Cincinnati Cactus and Succulent Society will be having its annual show and sale at the Krohn Conservatory on this date. I hope that we can get some of our members to this event to meet with their members and possibly make arrangements for future joint meetings and events.

Sunday September 21st  Traditionally, this has been the month when we have had a joint meeting with the Midwest Cactus and Succulent Society at the home of Bill and Nancy Hendericks in Perry Ohio. Bill is the President of the Society, and is owner of Klyn Nursery. Last year Bill presented a PowerPoint program of his travels to South Africa, an area which is so rich in its flora of indigenous succulents that Bill decided that it was best to make 4 installments of this program- perhaps he has saved the last installment for this event. Meetings are usually held on the 3rd Sunday of the month, so please keep the day of  September 21st open.

October

Wednesday October 15th, at the Franklin Park Conservatory. Program to be announced.

November

Wednesday November 19th: We will be meeting 7:30 p.m. at the Franklin Park Conservatory.

December

Wednesday December 17th; we will be meeting 7:30 at the Franklin Park Conservatory.

This is the time of our annual winter potluck. Members are asked to bring a covered dinner or side-dish to share with other members and guests. This is an informal meeting, without a scheduled program, but will probably include elections for our officers for 2009, and an initial planning session for programs for 2009.
