To head home, get off of I-90 at Wall, go through the Bad Lands, and then head across South Dakota on Rte 44 over to I-29 and super slab it home. Or head south through the Black Hills and Custer State Park to catch US 20 in Nebraska and then to I-29 at Sioux City or even further on US 20 to Waterloo and then slab it to I-80 and home. You can back track on 36 north of Indianapolis if you're not in a hurry.

Mid West
The Daniel Boone National Forest Run (Columbus, Ohio, to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Gatlinburg, Tennessee):
Rte. 104 south to Chillicothe, Ohio; Rte. 50 east to Rte 42 south; cross Ohio R. at Aberdeen, Maysville; Rte. 11 south through Natural Bridge State Park (take detour through the Red River Gorge for low speed twisties). Rte. 66 from Oneida, Ky.; Rte. 25 south of Pineville, Ky., though Cumberland Gap (visitor’s center, camping, and overlook). Rte. 33 south to Knoxville; Rte 129 south through Maryville and to Foothills Parkway (Deal’s Gap is just up the road and waiting for a quick side trip). Foothills Parkway to Townsend and into park; and turn right for Gatlinburg. This is a low-traffic, quiet route with a lot of variation in roads. Great scenery! Consider spending the night at Kentucky's Natural Bridge State Park (campgrounds and lodge), or at Cumberland Gap. Total route is about 450 miles and may be done in one day. (LW)

Harrisonburg, Virginia, on I-81 to Charleston, WV, by the Highland Scenic Highway: US33 into the George Washington National Forest; to Franklin and south on US220; in Monterey take US 250 west to Durbin and catch a left onto Back Mountain Road just on the other side of town; on Back Mountain Road proceed through the Monongahela National Forest to Cass (tourist attraction is the Cass Scenic Railroad State Park); depart from Cass on WV66 west; turn left on US219 and then right onto the Highland Scenic Highway through the Monongahela National Forest; then WV39 further on the Highland Scenic Highway to Richwood; continue on WV39 past 19 in Summersville; from WV39 take WV 16 and then WV 85 to Charleston. Campgrounds, The Home Stead, abundant rivers and falls, low traffic, generally good pavement, hot springs, non stop twisties, and some of the best mountain scenery in the Appalachians!!! Plan on taking a whole day to make this trip.)

Chief Joseph Scenic Byway: Go north out of Cody to the Beartooth Highway. A right takes you to the Beartooth pass and then to Red Lodge. A left takes you to Cooke City and the northeast entrance of Yellowstone. (C&D)
Flaming Gorge: Green River to Vernal, Utah. Take a camera. Great places to camp are located south of the gorge and in the mountains. (LW)
