Its so easy
when you're on the job to get focused on peripherals and
forget the essentials. In the midst of conflict I alway
try to take a deep breath and remember what my priorities
are. What's your most important priority? I once had a
fellow letter carrier tell me that the principles he used
in dealing with his bosses ensured that he would always
walk away a winner. That showed me that his main priority
was to be victorious.
Craft workers: do you view your
boss as an opponent that must be vanquished
at all costs?
Bosses: are those you have
charge over opponents that must be dominated?
There is by the very nature
of the supervisor to supervisee relationship a certain
amount of tension. This is nothing peculiar to the Postal
Service. But I believe great strides can be made in
workplace relationships by stressing the importance of
recognizing every individual as a unique person whose
greatest value is something bigger than how much
production or overtime you can get out of them. Pie in
the sky? Maybe so. But when all is said and done I want
to be remembered as someone who respected people: even
postal bosses and postal workers. Remember that everybody
is first a person created in God's image: everything else
will pass.
